Good for research

• Search Engines   Use "  " for phrases, + and - for require or exclude. Be specific and use three to five words.
• AltaVista  A comprehensive and powerful search engine. Check the advanced options and the expanded multimedia offerings. 
• Answers.com Cross-indexes online research tools and displays result on one page. Useful for short quick ansers.
• Google A powerful engine, with a directory added. Try Google's  U.S. Government search and  advanced options. There's also an excellent image search and maps.  
• Teoma   Teoma returns "highly authoritative" web pages on one side of the page, and experts' links on the other. Topic experts sometimes comment on their choices. Web pages are grouped by topic.

• About.com  Human guides have selected and annotated the sources. Really useful. 
• CompletePlanet Here you can search or browse databases. The results indicate relevance, newness, popularity, and links. CompletePlanet focuses on the "deep web" and provides a study on its importance and contents.  You can limit your search to these deep web sites, or to only new sites, top sites, tutorials or other resources. 
• Librarians' Index to the Internet Especially for public libraries. Updated weekly. 
• Yahoo  One of the oldest and best of Internet directories, with a search engine.  

 

•  Meta Engines
• Dogpile  Searches 13 web engines, 3 newsgroup indexes, 2 FTP (File Transfer) sites, weather, stock quotes, business news, and newswires. 
• IxQuick Perhaps the best yet, uses only the engines which can handle your search, eliminates duplicates, assigns stars for number of times a site appears in top ten. 
• Metaeureka Includes the best search engines and is fast.
