Geography and Maps

• ClassBrain: State Reports. A good resource for students, with information on each state as well as on countries. Includes data on history, statistics, maps, government, economy, and geographical information.
• Color Landform Atlas of the U.S. For each state there's a color relief map, a county map, a black and white,1895 and a postscript map. States also have links to related sites or other maps. 
• Country Studies  100 different full length area handbooks from the Library of Congress Research Service. The database is searchable by country or topic.  
• Flags of the World  This is a huge website with over 18,000 pages of information about flags and 32000 pictures. Users can look for flags by country or topic, and topics range from pirates to flags in movies. Part of the site answers frequently asked questions, and one sections has line drawings of flags which may be printed out and colored in.  
• Geographic Names Information System  An outstanding resource for finding places--cemeteries, towns, hills, bays, cliffs, channels, etc. From the USGS. Click on "Query GNIS". 
• GettyThesaurus of Geographic Names  A gazetteer for the world, with latitude, longitude. Other information, if known, is included. 
• Google Maps now shows a satellite image of any address, as well as the street image. Or, you can have the street map overlay the satellite image. Can search by exact address. You can also click and drag the maps or re-center by double clicking.    GoogleEarth is a more powerful program which you may download free and point and zoom to anyplace you want. Take a look at this new product.
• Maps from the Perry-Castanada Library Map Collection A large map collection from the University of Texas.  
• Panoramic Maps 1847-1925  Spectacular maps from the Library of Congress.
• Portals to the World The Library of Congress has gathered information on nations of the world in one place. this excellent database includes entries from World Factbook, Country Studies, Encyclopedia Britannica and selected web links.  
• Terraserver This Microsoft website will show you aerial images, urban area images and statistics, and topographic images for any address. You can link to the Virtual Earth product, which is also in the testing stage.  
• U.S. Gazetteer  From the U.S. Census Bureau, uses Tiger Map Server and Census data. 
• The World Factbook Brief description and map of each country, covering geography, people, history, government, infrastructure, and the military. This data is used as the basis for many other web sites. Includes each country's flag.
